Red Is Back

It has been a summer full of tasty and interesting white and rosado wines.

We have seen both Basque Txakoli and Catalan Vi D’Agulla in white and pink versions.

Listan Blanco from the Canary Islands made a first appearance here as did white Maria Gomes from Portugal in two versions, sparkling and still.

Bubbly Cava (white as well as rosado) has been particularly popular all summer long.

As we shift into the fall season, I am starting to see new red wines, many of which are coming in at very reasonable prices.

This week we feature red wines that have just arrived in Berkeley. Some of these are familiar labels that have changed to a new vintage, while other familiar brands are now more attractively priced. This week too, we have several red wines that are altogether new at The Spanish Table.

To taste these wines at their best, try this simple and fast recipe that I cobbled together last week from some of the uniquely delicious products from The Spanish Table. This dish relies on the tasty new Barcelos Linguiça (a Portuguese style sausage made nearby in Tracy, California) for flavoring and needs no seasoning other than salt and pepper.

FYI: Joe Barcelos himself will be here in the Berkeley store sampling his products this Sunday, September 7th from 12 noon – 4 pm. Come meet the Linguiça man, taste his wares and then takes some home (along with a few new red wines, of course) and try this recipe.

 

Linguiça and White Beans

Ingredients:

¼ cup – Portuguese extra virgin olive oil

1 cup – thinly sliced onion

3 – sliced piquillo peppers (we have the fresh ones for sale right now)

1 lb. – Barcelos Linguiça (I like the ‘hot’ style)

1jar (23 oz.) – Gutarra brand white beans in brine (I like the young ‘Pochas’ beans)

1 cup – boiling water

Salt and pepper to taste

Directions:

Heat the olive oil in a 10” clay cazuela or sauté pan over medium heat. Add the sliced onions and a small pinch of salt. Sauté the onions until they are soft and starting to brown (about 5 minutes). Slice the Linguiça into bite sized pieces and add to the onions and oil. Sauté the Linguiça until lightly browned (about 10 minutes). Add the sliced piquillo peppers (sauté for 5 minutes if using fresh). Rinse the white beans under running water and add them to the cazuela. Add the boiling water (cold water can crack a hot cazuela) and simmer the whole mixture briefly (two minutes). Adjust the salt and pepper to taste, ladle into bowls and serve with crusty bread and red wine.

Navarro Lopez Old Vines Crianza 2001 500 years ago, if you were a member of the Spanish royal court, you drank wines from the Valdepeñas region that lies south of Toledo. Today, after centuries of obscurity, the region is making a comeback. This wine, made from Tempranillo, is earthy, tart and savory, as is the style in D.O. Valdepeñas. 12 months of barrel age (not something they did 500 years ago) has rounded the flavors, added a bit of tannic complexity and sweet oak aroma to the wine. This traditional, very ‘Spanish tasting’ wine was a good value at $13.99. Now, the price is much better, so we just bought a bunch of it. This is a fine candidate for buying by the box. $8.99

Barbadillo Tinto 2005 The same folks who make Barbadillo Sherries and the ever popular Barbadillo Palomina Fina white wine also make this young red wine from a blend of estate grown Tempranillo, Syrah, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and a local grape called Tintilla. Classified as a Vino de la Tierra de Cadiz, this versatile red wine is tart and youthful with primary grape fruit character and some underlying tannins. $9.99

 

Paso a Paso 2006 Bodegas Volver in D.O. La Mancha makes this lightly oaked (6 months in barrel) Tempranillo that used to be called Mano a Mano in previous vintages. Ripe cherry/blackberry fruit character overlaps with the medium weight oak tannins, creating a unified wine that will bring a bit of Spanish style to a wide range of foods. $10.99

 

Masia de Bielsa Tinto 2007 Earlier this season we featured the Masia de Bielsa rosado. We just received the tinto version of this Garnacha wine from D.O. Campo de Borja that was featured last week in the San Francisco Chronicle (read about it here). This juicy, bright, youthful red, fashioned from old vine fruit sees no time in oak. The ripe berry aroma and tart acidity that one expects from Campo de Borja Garnacha are all to be found in this well composed wine. $10.99

 

Viña Cobos Felino 2007 The Californian winemaker Paul Hobbs crafts this Malbec at his Viña Cobos winery in Argentina. The newest release of Felino is a bold, dark, unfiltered wine that ages for eight months in oak before bottling. Abundant (but not overwhelming) dark berry fruit character blends with flavors of spicy black pepper and foundational minerality. $19.99

 

Primitivo Quiles Raspay Tinto “Brut”2002 We just received the latest vintage of this oh-so-traditional Monastrell from Alicante. Less ripe than most of the Monastrell currently coming from neighboring Jumilla, Raspay is leaner, earthier and lighter in color than Jumilla Monastrell too. Dried cherry and raisin fruit along with savory, earthy flavors characterize this wine. $21.99

“We Want Bargains”

In the time that I have worked here at The Spanish Table, certain trends have become apparent as we move through the calendar. In the post-holiday period our desire for excellent wines at very reasonable prices grows exponentially in comparison to the rest of the year. Holiday extravagance is done with and a more austere, restrained (I hesitate to use the word sober) style of cooking and eating is in order. Extravagant multi-day preparations with rich, cream based sauces are out. Quick soups and simple stews featuring winter vegetables and lighter flavors are in.

So, to accompany the current desire for economy, I want to point out some really tasty wines at prices that will put a happy post-holiday smile on the face of even the most frugal of shoppers. We have a few new items to share with you as well as some trusted favorites that will compliment your table without busting your budget.

Perfectly in tune with the current mood, I (and many of you if the amount of smoked paprika we have sold today is any indication) noticed that in yesterday’s San Francisco Chronicle, Amanda Berne offers up a recipe for just the kind of hearty but simple food that I crave at this time of year. Here is the link to the article on the SFgate web site that includes this recipe which I am reprinting here:

 

Smoky Chickpea Soup (Serves 4-6)

2 tablespoons olive oil

2 carrots, peeled and roughly chopped

1 onion, roughly chopped

3 celery stalks, roughly chopped

2 garlic cloves, crushed

1/2 teaspoon saffron

1 teaspoon cumin

1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika

5 cups vegetable broth

2 cans (15 ounces each) chickpeas, drained

— Kosher salt, to taste

— High-quality olive oil

Instructions: Heat oil in a stockpot over medium-high heat. Add carrots, onion and celery and cook for 5 minutes, or until soft.

Add garlic, saffron, cumin and smoked paprika, and cook for an additional minute, stirring constantly. Add broth and chickpeas, and season to taste. Simmer for 25 minutes, turn off heat and cool for about 5 minutes.

Puree in batches in a blender until very, very smooth. Season to taste. To serve, swirl a little drizzle of very good olive oil on top.

 

Dibon Brut Reserva Cava $8.99 I brought a first few cases of this wine in during the holidays and it sold well without any promotion at all on my part. The new shipment is arriving this week and we hope to keep this one in stock as long as possible. This traditionally styled sparkler is made from a blend of Parellada, Macabeo and Xarel-lo grapes. Aromas of grapefruit and toasted brioche encounter assertive bubbles and bright citrusy flavor in the glass. An excellent example of a well priced Cava that can turn any simple meal into a special event.

 

Arribeño Roble 2003 $6.99 ($5.99 by the case) Arribeño Roble is a young Tempranillo from Ribera del Duero that fully expresses the character of the region. Dark garnet color, loamy forest floor aroma and firm grape skin tannins. Light oak aroma comes from a short 4 months of barrel age. Black cherry fruit character and a smoky finish round out the picture. This wine is one of The Spanish Table’s ‘House Wine’ selections. These great bargains are all $6.99 by the bottle with a special (mix & match) discount of $5.99/each with full case purchase.

 

Barbadillo Palomino Fina 2006 $6.99 ($5.99 by the case)This is one of Spain’s most popular whites as well as one of our favorite ‘house wines’ here in Berkeley. Palomina Fina is a grape that mostly gets used for Sherry production, which makes sense as Barbadillo is a well known winemaker in the Jerez region.  This white table wine is medium bodied and floral scented with a fresh, clean finish.

 

Mano a Mano 2003 $6.99 ($5.99 by the case)This Tempranillo from La Mancha in central Spain is typical of this  hot, arid region where grape vine and olive trees stretch to the horizon, interspersed with the occasional windmill.  This wine displays dried cherry fruit with background oak tannins, making it a perfect ‘house wine’ to have on hand for a wide variety of needs. It will taste fine with a pizza, but will really shine with traditional Spanish foods such as Jamón Serrano and sheep’s milk cheeses.

 

Justino Henriques Full Rich Madeira $9.99 Sometimes a little glass of something rich and delicious can be just as rewarding as a big glass full of an ordinary wine. If you are in this kind of mood, I suggest this wine as a perfect way to end a cold winter’s day.  This dark, sweet dessert wine from the island of Madeira in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean is redolent of raisins and butterscotch.  A hint of smoky complexity is present in the background.

 

Porto Pocas LBV 2000 $18.99 Another excellent sweet wine to serve at this time of year is the ever-popular Late Bottled Vintage Port (LBV for short).  Akin to the (much) more expensive Vintage Port, LBV ages in barrel for four years (twice as long as Vintage port) before bottling.  The final result is a wine with dark ruby color, assertive pomegranate and cranberry fruit character, lively acidity and underlying minerality.  Unlike Vintage Port that ages and develops over many years, LBV is intended for near term consumption. Sip this in front of the fire (or television set) and experience contentment.

Outdoor Entertainment

Among the many reasons to love living in the Bay Area are the numerous outdoor concerts, plays and other performances that reappear each year like seasonal fruits and vegetables when the weather gets warm.

Last night I was at the California Shakespeare Festival pouring samples of a few Argentine wines we carry. Several theater patrons commented on how the fragrant Sur de los Andes Torrontès white wine was a perfect match for the cool twilight hour before the performance.

This weekend I’ll be packing a picnic for an outing (on public transit, of course) to Stern Grove in San Francisco to see Os Mutantes (legendary Brazilian psychedelic band from the 60s) and Los Amigos Invisibles (unique and super-danceable Venezuelan jazz/funk). A dry, spritzy, low alcohol Portuguese Vinho Verde will surely be among my pic-i-nic basket goodies (‘Oh Yogi, this wine is dee-licious’).

The San Francisco Mime Troupe is celebrating their 48th season of free political theatre in the parks around the Bay Area (this weekend in Berkeley at Cedar Rose Park). Usually, as we wait for the show to start, I spread a blanket on the grass and open a bottle of Spanish rosado. The wine pairs beautifully with tuna stuffed piquillo peppers and other light fare (it’s a good match with progressive politics too).

Some of these events take a bit of advance planning and preparation. When you see that an event is ‘free admission’, as many are, you will always need to plan on arriving early and claiming a space for your group or be prepared to enjoy the performance from a distance (sometimes a very long distance). Bring food of course (including wine and extra water), but also a newspaper or magazine to read while you wait and an extra sweater or blanket for the always unpredictable Bay Area weather. Also, though these events are often free and open to the public, a cash donation of some sort helps insure that these cultural events continue to reappear in years to come (don’t worry about the where and the how…the volunteers with the collection buckets will find you).

These events only last until the start of the rainy season so it’s important to get out there and enjoy the cultural cornucopia while it lasts. Here are some trusty favorites as well as some new arrivals from The Spanish Table’s wine department to jump start your pre-show picnic plans.

Cerveza:

Jerome Cerveza Roja $6.99 (660ml)

Jerome Cerveza Negra $6.99 (660ml)

Just in time for the heat of summer comes this lineup of microbrewery ale from Argentina.

Named after the family German Sheppard (who’s profile is featured prominently on the label) Jerome Brewing Company is a pioneer in the production of small batch (and I mean really small, as in 5 barrels a day) Argentine ales. We currently carry the Roja, a bold, hoppy ale that reminds me of some of our local bay Area brews, as well as the Negra, a dark and creamy version of a british stout.

Blanco:

Avinyó Vi D’Agulla 2006 $12.99 The Avinyó Cava that we carry (the traditional Brut Reserva As well as the new Brut Rosado) is always top notch. This small winery also produces a traditional summer wine called Vi D’Agulla (translates literally as ‘needle wine’). This lightly effervescent white wine made from Petit Grain Muscat is floral and aromatic like a Moscatel, but only gently sweet. The light bubbles lift the scent and give the wine a lively, fresh character. The prickly effervescence is what gives the wine its name. Serve Vi D’Agulla as a welcoming cocktail to your dinner guests and watch the smiles spread with each sip.

Barbadillo Palomino Fino 2006 $6.99 It’s back! The most popular white wine in Spain has returned in the new vintage. Made from the local Palomino Fino grapes, blended with a bit of Viura so I’m told, this young white wine from Cadiz in the south of Spain is refreshingly simple and bright. Add some melon and citrus and you have the makings of an excellent Sangria blanco.

Sur de los Andes Torrontés 2006 $11.99 For an Argentine version of Sangria blanco, try using this ripe, Viognier-like white wine from Mendoza. Rich, floral aromatics and peachy fruit character call out for some stone fruit and sparkling tonic water.

Granbazan Ambar 2005 $21.99 This excellent top shelf Albariño displays a flinty mineral foundation underlying bright citrus fruit and slightly oxidized complexity. Very popular in Spain, but almost unheard of in the USA.

Rosado:

Artazuri Rosado 2006 $12.99 The newly arrived 2006 vintage of this dry rosado is made from 100% Garnacha grapes grown in the high altitude vineyards of D.O. Navarra, the traditional home of Spanish rosado. This perennial customer favorite displays gentle fresh berry scent along with a bright citrus fruit character. The finely detailed aromas and flavors blend effortlessly in this excellent summertime wine.

Tinto:

Arbanta 2005 $10.99 An excellent young Rioja produced from Organic fruit. Recently rated 89 Points by The Wine Advocate, Jay Miller reviewed the wine, saying “The 2005 Biurko Gorri Arbanta offers superb value, among the best in my Spanish tastings. It is 100% Tempranillo, tank fermented and aged. Medium ruby in color, it exhibits remarkable aromatic complexity for its price point with cherries, red currants, and spice in evidence. The wine is elegant, balanced, and fruity right through the lengthy finish. Drink it over the next 1-3 years.

Torremayor Crianza 2004 $12.99 Viña Santa Marina is an innovative winery located in the far flung Extremadura region in western Spain. They make a popular wine called Gargola as well as this barrel aged crianza wine made from 100% Tempranillo. Bright cherry-like fruit with firm but well-integrated tannins. An excellent value.

Peique Mencía 2006 $13.99 One of my favorite young Mencía grape wines from D.O. Bierzo has just arrived in the new 2006 vintage. Vibrant fresh cherry fruit character encounters dry oak leaf aroma and flinty background mineral aroma and flavor. Perfect for summer cookouts in the back yard or wherever you may be.

Collectors wines:

Hacienda Monasterio 2003 $42.99 Peter Sisseck of Pingus fame makes this dark colored and deeply flavorful D.O. Ribera del Duero wine. It is a perennial favorite that we receive limited quantities of once a year. Steven Tanzer’s International Wine Cellar gave this wine 92 points, saying “Deep ruby. Explosive, sexy aromas of cherry, plum, incense, freshly ground coffee and succulent herbs. Focused and deep, with red and dark berry flavors complicated by candied violet, smoky bacon and cracked pepper. A ripe, weighty wine with a dense, chewy texture and compelling freshness, especially for the year. Finishes with a note of sweet cherry preserves, fine tannins and excellent length.”

Hacienda Monasterio Reserva 2001 $72.00 The Hacienda Monasterio Reserva from the phenomenal 2001 vintage has just arrived. Using the same carefully selected fruit as the younger crianza wine, this Reserva sees longer barrel maturation to smooth out the tannins and bring out the dark berry fruit character. This very special wine is very limited in availability. We have one 12 bottle case to share with you, so act soon if you want some for your cellar.
